Here are some images of beekeeping from the Mediterranian island of Cyprus. Note the legs in pans for ants and the wasp/hornet trap set aside for capturing what would normally prey on the bees. The landscape pics show the immediate vacinity around the hives - fairly barren but they harvested about 90lbs from the 3 hives this year.

Here is an image from Lithuania. This was taken inside a restaurant that was once an immense wine cellar. The image on the wall is from medival times and has been left the same way since. (c)Neil Shelley

These images are of a store in New Zealand called Bees Online; this is a fantastic place to visit if you get the opportunity. They have a fascinating observation hive and enclosed hive for observation. They also have a master beekeeper come out and give a talk as well as a store front for their huge array of honey and honey related items. The landscape picture is of behind the store - no wonder they have so much honey. Sorry for the fuzzy pictures, cameras don't do well with screen. Copyright 2007 Neil Shelley

Here are some images from our beginners class held this spring (2007).

frame

This is a frame of honey that is offered at breakfast in a hotel in Istanbul, Turkey. This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel and they have offered this type of honey each time. The honey is very light and reminiscent in flavor of clover/alfalfa and it was very good. Hotel patrons simply cut off a piece to eat. Notice the custom stand to hold the frame with the dish under it to capture the drippings. Image copyright 2007 Neil Shelley.

romanian hives

Here is an image of some hives that were just outside my hotel in Bucharest, Romania. The day was far too cold for the bees to be flying (40 degrees at best) but the weather was nice enough to get this shot. It would appear that standard 10 frame Langstroth equipment is being used. Here is a honey store in Koshien Japan (near Osaka). The proprietress (shown) is 85 years old and has run this shop for 60 years. They produce all of their own honey in the countryside nearby (her husband was the beekeeper) and they also produce royal jelly, pollen, candy, beeswax blocks as well as some other products that I couldn't tell what they were (ginger roots in honey, beetles in honey?). There were many different colors of honey to choose from and a 580 gram (18.5ounce) bottle of honey cost 2100 Yen or $17.65. The proprietress was very friendly and consented to let me take these photos. Images copyright 2006 Neil Shelley.

wild hiveammo 2ammo 3

These are some images of a wild hive that was found to be living in a large abandoned ammo box. There was a small opening in the top of the box that the bees used as the entrance (first 2 pictures). We opened the box to check winter stores (third picture); the person that found this on his property intends to move them in the spring to a normal hive and start beekeeping. Here is a quick image captured at the state fair this year. These kids were fascinated by the observation hive - just as all kids were (and some adults!). Image copyright 2006 Neil Shelley

storefront

These are some images of a beautiful little store in Brussels, Belgium. Inside the shop you can see the lovely honey displays accentuated with candles and other beekeeping paraphernalia. The store sold honey from all over the world (including the USA) as well as propolis, pollen, royal jelly, candles, balms and other goods (edible) made from honey. At the time the images were taken, a 500 gram (17-1/2oz) bottle of honey costs 6 euros ($7.56!) and the prices went up from there. The cheapest honey - imported from California (3 euro or $3.78 for 500 grams). Images copyright 2006 by Neil Shelley.

Here are three images of a wild hive in Dubai, UAE. These are likely to be Apis florea bees native to the middle eastern region. These bees are very small (about 1/2 the size of Apis mellifera) and are very gentle; I (Neil) was able to approach them and get within inches without any defensive behavior being displayed (third photo). Here are two images of hives in Russia. These were taken roughly 2 hours north of Moscow. The first image is of hives located at a monastery. The second is of an empty hive in the backyard of the bed and breakfast I stayed at. Images copyright 2005 by Neil Shelley.
